ABSTRACT

Abstract.Aconductiveliquidsubjectedtoanelectricfieldcanbecomedistorteddue totheelectrostaticforceonitssurface.Thedistortionisoftenintheformofsmall projectionsthatcanbecomeconical,e.g.,theTaylorconeinaDCfield[1].Thispaper reportsastudyofthedistortionofawatersurfaceexposedtoaperpendicularACfield, inthefrequencyrange20-200Hz.Thewaterwasconfinedtoanarrowchannel.The wavelengthoftheobserved(oscillating)projectionswasmeasuredandfoundtoagree closelywithpredictionsusingMathieuanddispersionequations.Theprojections appearasastandingwavewiththesamefrequencyastheappliedvoltage.
