ABSTRACT

Electrohydrodynamics(EHD)dealwiththeinteractionbetweenelectricfieldsandfluidflow. Thisinteraction,forexample,canresultinelectricallyinducedpumping,mixing,or enhancementofheattransfer.TheapplicationofEHDtoheattransferandmasstransport problemscontinuestoshowpromiseinindustrialapplicationswherespecialrequirements andrestrictionsareimposed,butenhancedheattransferandmasstransportarerequired (Seyed-YagoobiandBryan(1999)).Oneexampleisenhancedperformanceandcontrolof two-phaseheattransferinrefrigerationandprocessindustries.Thisincludesevaporationand condensationheattransfer.Anotherexampleismasstransportinmicrogravityenvironments wheresingle-phaseliquidortwo-phaseliquid-vaportransportisrequiredwithhighreliability {fewifanymovingparts),andlowornovibration.TheadvantagesofEHDenhancement are:1)rapidandsmartcontrolofenhancementbyvaryingtheappliedelectricfield;2)nonmechanicalandsimpleindesign;3)suitableforspecialenvironments{space);4)applicable tosingleandmulti-phaseflows;and5)minimalpowerconsumption.However,the implementationofhighvoltageinthesepromisingindustrialapplicationsstillposesdesign andeconomicchallenges.Furthermore,theimplementationoftheEHDphenomenatoheat transferandfluiddynamicsintroducesacomplexinteractionofmanyinterdependent variables.
