ABSTRACT

The manipulation and separation of partiCles in suspensions using a. c. electric fields has developed rapidly in the last few years. This has been achieved through the application of micro-fabrication methods in the manufacture of microelectrode structures which generate high electric fields from low potentials. During the a.c. electrokinetic manipulation of particles in suspension on microelectrode structures, fluid flow was observed. We arrived at this conclusion because particles of different sizes and properties were observed moving at the same velocities (1).
