ABSTRACT

Vegetables are produced mainly and intensively in the urban fringe of towns and cities of Lagos, owing to high urban demand also the high costs of transportation of vegetables from rural production centres located some distance away from urban markets (Omidiji, 1978). Vegetables are a valuable supplement to the diet of town dwellers. They are also a valuable source of vitamins, protein and minerals, but a cursory survey in tropical and subtropical areas indicated that the average daily consumption of edible greens is about 0.02-0.025 kg (Adetimirin, 1996).
