chapter  4
Differences between containment structures and other structures
Pages 2

Although a statistical philosophy for the definition of loadings and structural resistances has been developed for about two decades, the use of statistical treatments has not progressed into the structural design process. In general, design loadings are treated in an entirely deterministic manner, and very precise deterministic structural calculations are based on them. The focus of the profession's attention is predominantly on structural analysis and little attention is paid to variability. Moves are needed to adjust design procedures and engineering education towards a more holistic approach.
