ABSTRACT
For shell structures, much more extreme behaviours are encountered. Following buckling [34], there may be a massive and catastrophic loss of strength (Fig. 9), which most engineers believe should be recognised by an additional penalty in partial safety factors. One of the difficulties in identifying this behaviour from a computer analysis is that the rapidity of the fall depends on the displacement parameter which is studied: the 'worst' parameter is not always easily chosen.
