Silos are process vessels, so failures of function (ie flow or crop preservation) are as important as structural failures. The correct sizing of silage silo diameter is important so that fill rate can achieve proper control of fermentation and prevent the risk of overheating and fire. Premature deterioration is also a frequent feature in silos, as many stored materials become highly corrosive when damp. The increase of wall friction from corrosion at the wall can substantially change both flow and pressure distributions in silos.
