ABSTRACT

The second example is a complex of Grain Silos which failed after 30 years of use. Information on the original design was in this case lacking but it was clear that in particular the 100mm Silo division walls were somewhat under reinforced and strangely detailed to current standards. Cracks of up to 25mm wide were extensive, grain was flowing through the cracks into adjacent bins and horizontal deflections in the walls of ± 75mm were apparent. In this case the involvement of the Health and Safety Executive seemed to be the real motivation for progressing a resolution of the problem.
