ABSTRACT

The effect of crack initiation and propagation is examined by testing field constructed asphalt slabs in cyclic direct tension. The mixture consisted of crushed stone aggregate, 5% asphalt cement content of 85/100 pen, 4.3 % air voids and 16.1 % voids in mineral aggregate. The mixture was poured into large forms at the construction site and compacted with 8 passes of a steel roller to achieve a thickness of 70 mm. The slabs were sawed into test size of 450 mm x 150 mm x 70 mm.
