ABSTRACT

Abstract The M6 motorway in the southern part o f Cumbria was constructed with a flexible composite pavement and opened to traffic in 1970. By the late 1970’s transverse cracking was evident in the surfacing and resurfacing works were undertaken. This work was limited in its effectiveness and cracks reappeared within 2 years. In 1987 further investigative works were undertaken which established that the pavement was predominantly structurally sound with a considerable residual life which could be realised if an effective method of crack sealing/inhibiting could be devised.
