ABSTRACT
A b s t r a c t P l a s t i c s a r e used w i d e l y i n many a s p e c t s of c i v i l e n g i n e e r i n g and o f t e n come i n t o c o n t a c t w i t h h o s t i l e e n v i r o n m e n t s . Such m a t e r i a l s need t o be r i g o r o u s l y t e s t e d i n o r d e r to e v a l u a t e t h e i r p o t e n t i a l u s e f u l n e s s i n t h e i r e n d - u s e e n v i r o n m e n t , and t h i s s h o u l d i n c l u d e an a s s e s s m e n t of t h e i r s u s c e p t i b i l i t y to m i c r o b i a l b i o d e t e r i o r a t i o n . The methodology f o r p l a s t i c s t e s t i n g i s c u r r e n t l y b e i n g a s s e s s e d by the P l a s t i c s P r o j e c t G r o u p of the I n t e r n a t i o n a l B i o d e t e r i o r a t i o n R e s e a r c h G r o u p . I n the i n v e s t i g a t i o n s p r e s e n t e d h e r e , p o l y e s t e r p o l y u r e t h a n e foam t e s t p i e c e s , both w i t h and w i t h o u t the i n c o r p o r a t i o n of t h e f o r m u l a t i o n b i o c i d e V i n y z e n e B . P . ( 1 0 , 1 0 ' - o x y b i s p h e n o x a r s i n e ) were found t o be s u s c e p t i b l e t o d e g r a d a t i o n i n both s o i l and m a r i n e e n v i r o n m e n t s .
