ABSTRACT

Both exocytosis of synaptic vesicles and secretory granules are controlled by cytoplasmic free Ca2+. The storage organelles fuse with the plasma membrane in response to a rise of the intracellular Ca2+ concentration, caused by an influx of Ca2+ from the extracellular space and/or release from intracellular stores. Following exocytosis, vesicle membranes are retrieved by endocytosis.
