Priortoloading,measurescanbetakentopreventorminimisedamageto thestructure.Thesecanbedescribedasprovidingeitherprotectivestrengtheningorhardening.Theaimofbothofthesemeasuresistoincreasethe resistanceofthestructuretotheappliedloading.However,theydealwith differenteffects,whichmaybecausedbydifferenttypesofloading.
