ABSTRACT
Some chorine derivatives can be carcinogenic. Those most relevant to water treatment are haloforms, which arise mainly by reaction of free chlorine with humic substances. Formation of haloforms is rather slow (from an hour to several days) depending on temperature, pH, the type and concentration of humic precursors, and the type of disinfectant residual.
