ABSTRACT

Abstract By means of a recently refined method for manual calculations it is possible to estimate the risk of thermal cracking in young concrete. Thus, a model for calculation of thermal stresses has been formulated and calibrated to laboratory tests and to methods for thermal stress analysis based on more complex material models. The method is mostly suited for cases with extemal restraint and fairly uniform temperatures within the cast structures, i. e. when there is a risk of through cracks in the cooling phase. Only a few simple formulas are used and the method is therefore very suitable for more rough evalutations of crack risks e. g. on the building site and in pilot studies.
