ABSTRACT
The existence of an interfacial transition zone (ITZ) in concrete, and a belief that its existence significantly influences concrete properties have been fundamental tenets in concrete technology for many years. The results of our microstructural investigations carried out over several years on laboratory mixed concretes confirm the physical existence of the ITZ in these concretes, but suggest that major modification in the details of the accepted picture are required.
