ABSTRACT

OVERVIEW A nther (Latin anthera, from Greek anthos for flower)—the fertile part of the stamen where, in microsporangia, microsporogenesis occurs and pollen grain formation and maturation proceeds (Plate 5). The term was introduced by Linnaeus. The first morphological description of anther and pollen dates back to the late seventeenth century (Grew, 1672; Camerarius, 1694). In the early eighteenth century, Linnaeus defined all the parts of the stamen and anther. The terminology proposed by him has been universally accepted.
