ABSTRACT

Individuals beyond age 65 are likely to suffer loss of visual acuity and some level of hearing loss as well as reduced cognitive capacities, such as memory and attention (see Chapters 2 and 4 for more details). In addition, older adults often have at least one chronic condition, such as arthritis, hypertension, or diabetes (Figure 9.1), and many have multiple chronic conditions. Many women and men older than 65 are also caregivers, caring for a spouse or an elderly parent.
