ABSTRACT

In a case control study of 4108 hospital admissions, there were 190 ADEs, 60 preventable ADEs, and 84 severe ADEs (after controlled for length of stay and level of care). When compared to controls, there was no significant correlation for age, number of drugs received within 24 hours or since admission, presence of altered mental status, or presence of elevated bilirubin or creatinine levels. For all ADEs, exposure to psychoactive agents was a risk factor, as was cardiovascular drugs for severe ADEs.
