ABSTRACT
Principle Biolistics was developed in order to introduce genes into whole cells rather than protoplasts because of the difficulties of regeneration encountered in some plant species. It is also applicable to animal cells. The principle is to forcibly deliver DNA into tissues by propulsion. The propulsive force is achieved either by explosion of gunpowder in a bullet or by decompression of a gas (usually helium).
