ABSTRACT

Taxonomy is the process of naming, describing, and organizing plants and animals into categories based on similarities and differences. These categories indicate evolutionary relationships because similar animals generally have common ancestors. This structured system of classication was originally based on morphology, but as molecular analyses became rened, genetic data became very useful in elucidating relationships that remained unresolved. Both morphological and genetic evaluations have shortcomings, and so it is important to use all available information when inferring taxonomic relationships.
