Abstract Flevoland (97,000 ha) is one of the polders of the Zuiderzee project. During reclamation, irreversible crack formation in the upper clay layer has taken place, resulting in a substantial increase in permeability and storage capacity. This additional storage reduces the rise of water levels during extreme wet periods.
