Abstract The Bas-Rhone Languedoc region was primarily a vine-growing area until 1955, when the first French regional development programme introduced irrigation. Forty years later, what conclusions can be drawn from an analysis of the qualitative and quantitative effects brought about as a result of this development programme, both on agriculture and on other induced activities?
