ABSTRACT

The outcome of long-tenn mechanical ventilation (LTMV) can be evaluated most constructively by examining its effects on survival, the natural history of the underlying disease, respiratory and cardiac function, morbidity, and the health status and quality of life of the recipient. The socioeconomic consequences of LTMV for the family or caregivers and the community as a whole should also be considered as part of the wider impact of this technological growth area.
