ABSTRACT
INTRODUCTION In 1988 the Rugby Football Union decided to redevelop Twickenham as a major sporting venue, having previously elected not to relocate but to rebuild at the home of rugby football. The plan involved replacing the North, East and West Stands in a phased manner and linking up to the rebuilt South Stand which had been completed six years earlier (Fig. 1).
