ABSTRACT

Ulva Jasciata, Gracilaria corticata and Enteromorpha intestinalis were collected from the shores of Kakra, Anjuna and Cabo de Rama along the Goan coast (Southwestern India) and screened for antibody-like substances. Protein was extracted by ammonium sulphate precipitation and the highest and lowest protien yields were obtained from U. fasciata and G. corticata, respectively. Each of the protein extracts showed hemagglutination activity against human red blood cells. The extract from E. intestinalis showed partial blood group specificity. Hemmagglutination activity of U. fasciata extract was inhibited with all 6 sugars tested for competitive inhibition. The crude extract contains a "lectin-like substance".
