ABSTRACT

The Euteleostei (Argentiformes through Tetraodontiformes) are regarded as the apomorph sister-group of the Clupeomorpha (Clupeiformes and Ostariophysi), as confirmed by Orti and Li (Chapter 1) who also confirm monophyly of the Euteleostei, findings previously supported from mitogenomic analysis (Inoue et al. 2003). However, Nelson (2006) found "less than desirable convincing evidence" that the Euteleostei is monophyletic. Spermatologically they are correspondingly diverse and offer no single spermatozoal character indicative of monophyly.
