ABSTRACT

Through various metabolic strategies, many detoxification enzymes such as cytochrome P450 oxidases, UDP-glucuronosyl transferases, N-acetyl transferases, sulphotransferases and glutathione S-transferases increase the water solubility of many toxic compounds as an initial step in their detoxification, metabolism and excretion. Others, such as the aldehyde-metabolizing enzymes, reduce the reactivity of reactive aldehydes, while ATP-dependent transporters neutralize potentially toxic compounds by removing them from target cells.
