ABSTRACT

L-Serine and glycine are involved in protein biosynthesis and serve as precursors in a variety of important biosynthetic pathways, including phospholipid synthesis (serine) and purine fonnation (glycine). Glycine and serine are also the main sources of one-carbon units in higher plant cells and, therefore, are at the basis of the whole C1 metabolism (for review, see Appling 1991: Rebeille and Douce 1998).
