ABSTRACT

IMPORTANCE OF BACTERIAL DISEASES IN POTATO PRODUCTION Bacterial diseases constitute the second major constraint to potato production worldwide (late blight is first). The main bacterial diseases affecting potatoes are caused by:

1 . Erwinia carotovora subsp. atroseptica (van Hall) Dye (reclassified as Pectobacterium carotovorum subsp. atrosepticum); Erwinia carotovora subsp. carotovora (Jones) Bergey, Harrison, Breed, Hamer and Huntoon (reclassified as Pectobacterium carotovorum subsp. carotovo rum); Erwinia chrysanthemi Burkholder, McFadden and Dimock (reclassified as Pectobacterium chrysanthemi)—causal agents of tuber bacterial soft rot and blackleg.
