ABSTRACT

Search engines allow you to type a word, phrase, or name, and retrieve Web sites and discussion group responses containing these words, phrases, or names. Depending on the search engine, the results that come up may or may not be relevant to your needs. Seek quality, not quantity. In most instances, you should not need to go on cyber fishing expeditions to locate useful Web sites. Use search engines to zero in on the correct URL (Web site address) of a recommended site or a resource mentioned in the newspaper or on television. For this reason, there will be no instruction on how to construct elaborate search strategies using search engines. Just keep it simple. In most instances, type a word or phrase in the white “search” block and click the Enter or Go button. Some of the search engines have topical directories that help narrow the search. Begin with the preselected groups of Web sites in the directories.
