ABSTRACT
When we consider the frantic activity involved in the preparation of European Standards we should step back a little and think why it is all happening and what is driving it. We should not assume that the European Standards will be used in the same way as our familiar old British Standards. They will not. This is because they form part of a framework of Regulations which are required by the European Community in order to guarantee that the free market works.
