ABSTRACT

Sediments and sedimentary rocks host an enormous range of features unique to the materials they are made of, the processes that deposit them, and changes that occur after deposition but before lithification. These features can include soft sediment deformation (Fig. 23.1A), crossbeds (Fig. 23.1B), mineralogical or size-graded beds (Fig. 23.1C), and intra-unit (Fig. 23.1D) or larger-scale angular unconformities. Other features may include bed forms like ripple marks and the shape and mineralogy of detrital mineral grains.
