ABSTRACT

In recent years awareness has grown concerning the significance of floodplains for a number of hydrological and ecological processes. As part of the river-floodplain system, wetlands have a valuable function in controlling surface and subsurface hydrological processes, such as by controlling flood water and groundwater recharge. Moreover, it is known that floodplains may play an important role within nutrient and pollutant dynamics as buffer zones https://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"> ( 1,2 ) https://s3-euw1-ap-pe-df-pch-content-public-p.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/9780429080050/6559e41b-64b9-4256-96a3-5980cbb6d757/content/eq1876.tif" xmlns:xlink="https://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"/> .
