ABSTRACT

The increasing awareness of the importance of soil for the maintenance of our environment has been emphasized by the number of national and international seminars held to discuss the problems of contaminated sites, bioremediation, and soil protection. This was confirmed in Germany in February 1998 with the passing of legislation covering soil protection (1). Since soil cannot be created and self-regeneration is a very slow process, the declared aim is to protect soil functions as an essential basis for human existence. Appropriate analysis processes are essential, to determine soil characteristics and to provide accurate monitoring.
