ABSTRACT

N.P. Sub and his associates at MIT have shown that good design embodies two basic principles (Sub. Bell, and Gossard, 1978). Yasubara and Sub (1980) formally stated these principles as design axioms and corollaries. The theory is further developed by Sub (1990). Unfortunately, the axioms and corollaries are relatively abstract and difficult to apply by practicing designers. Our approach is to recast the axioms as simple design rules and to illustrate their use by discussing a variety of practical design examples. The examples are also used to derive and illustrate the corollaries where appropriate.
