ABSTRACT
Land-use changes reflect different phases of socioeconomic development (i.e. social metabolism) and political climates, as well as environmental changes. Current land use has been greatly influenced by social driving forces and also by natural conditions. In order to understand the present state of land use and to forecast future trends, a historical perspective is of a special importance.
