ABSTRACT

Introduction The methodology of landscape approach to land-use / land-cover change study is presented. This approach enables perceiving the world as a system of interrelated territorial samples with different environmental situations. In response to this issue hierarchical landscape classification schemes are proposed for scale-dependent land-cover applications (for country, regional and local levels of Russia). A series of land-use/landcover mapping and classifications are being conducted using a combination of remote sensing data, traditional maps and in-field observations. The resultant land-cover maps and databases contain multiple information layers and statistics.
