ABSTRACT

Population The table below summarises population statistics from the first page of each country section. The table highlights not only the differences in total population between the countries included in this book but also the variations in population growth rates, the proportions of the population above and below working age and the proportions of the population living in urban areas. Most European countries have low population growth rates, the exceptions here are Germany and Turkey. In the case of Germany the dominant factor is the incorporation of the German Democratic Republic into the Federal Republic. Developed countries in Europe tend to have rather similar proportions of their population under 15 and over 65 years of age. This is less true in Eastern and Central Europe and less developed countries. The proportion of urban population is generally high throughout Europe; only Portugal has less than 50% of urban population.
