Anotherwayofdescriminatingthesethreestudydesignsisbyexaminingthepotential"target size"ofthegeneticeventstheymeasure.Asystemthatdetectsageneticallydominantevent doessobyphenotypicallymonitoringorselecting(suchasfordrugresistance)forthepresence ofanalteredgeneproductoranovelactivity.Atthemolecularlevel,veryspecificpoint mutations,deletions,recombinations,ortranslocationsarenecessarytogeneratetherequired alteration,andassociatedtranscriptional,translation,andposttranslationalregulatoryregions ofthegenemustbeunaffected.Thistypeofsystemrequiresagainoffunctionand,therefore, operatesunderverystrictconstraints.
