ABSTRACT
In1926-1930,theexistenceofsialicacidwasreportedbytheserologistsHiibener(1),Thomsen (2),andFriedenreich(3),whodetected(1)andinterpreted(2,3)thephenomenonof polyagglutinationcausedbythereactionofanti-TwiththeTantigen.Anti-T,presentinalmost allhumansera,recognizestheTantigenthatismaskedbysialicacidontheintactredblood cell(RBC)surfacebutisliberatedbytheactionofbacterialandviralsialidases.Inthiscase, sialicacidservestomaskanantigen.
