ABSTRACT
The containment, s t o r a g e and movement o f l i q u i d s , s o l i d s and gases w i t h i n geomembrane e n c l o s u r e s r e p r e s e n t s a d i s t i n c t and unique c h a l l e n g e f a c i n g t h e e n g i n e e r i n g and s c i e n t i f i c community. Depending upon t h e type o f m a t e r i a l s b e i n g r e - t a i n e d , one must be concerned about h e a l t h , environment, a g i n g , d u r a b i l i t y and s a f e t y a g a i n s t u n c e r t a i n t i e s ; a l l w i t h i n t h e framework o f an a p p r o p r i a t e c o s t - t o - b e n e f i t r a t i o f o r t h e s i t u a t i o n b e i n g c o n s i d e r e d . C l e a r l y i t i s a demandi n g t a s k , y e t one t h a t i s ne c e s s a r y and w o r t h w h i l e .
