ABSTRACT

Disposal of spent freshwater drilling muds on cultivated land is an acceptable, regulated activity in Saskatchewan. Regulatory guidelines limit the total dissolved solids (4000 mg/litre), chloride (1000 mg/litre) and sulphate (2000 mg/litre) concentrations, pH (5.5-8.5), and the maximum rate of any single application (100 bbl/acre or 40 m3/ha). The operator must also ensure that the mud is controlled on the site without excessive ponding or runoff.
