T his paper rep resen ts an attem pt b y the w riter to p rovid e some cu rren t con cepts and a framework for d iscu ssio n con cern in g the mechanisms of alkali silica reaction (ASR) in co n crete . It does not p urport to be a balanced p r e sentation of the cu rren t s ta te of the a r t , b u t it is o ffered in the hope that it may stim ulate fu r th er d iscu ssio n and fo cu ssed in v estig a tio n on what has become a g lobal, ra th er than a reg ion al problem .
