ABSTRACT
There are three functional pathways of cholesterol transport in plasma: a pathway that delivers dietary cholesterol from the intestine to the liver, a pathway that delivers cholesterol from the liver to extrahepatic tissues and a pathway in which extrahepatic cholesterol is transported back to the liver. The third pathway is often referred to as reverse cholesterol transport.
