ABSTRACT

Work sampling is a technique used to investigate the proportions of total time devoted to the various activities that are comprised by a job or work situation. It is an especially powerful tool in studying maintenance work where there are a large number of interruptions and delays. It can identify areas of inefficiency and poor performance where methods analysis can be introduced and improvements made. In addition to locating problem areas, the results of work sampling are effective for determining allowances (personal and unavoidable) applicable to the job, for determining machine and man-power utilization, and for establishing standards of production.
