ABSTRACT

The continuous effort to analyze and model processes and phenomena related to the majority of scientific fields, in conjunction with enhancing computer power has led to the development of Data Mining methods and techniques. Their significance lays on the fact that they approach each problem’s solution mainly driven by data structures rather than by theoretical hypotheses. Although, relevant research has increased during the last decade, their use and application in Geography is very recent. In this paper, an integration of Data Mining methods under a consistent methodological framework, namely, the Knowledge Discovery Procedure is proposed in order to model urban growth dynamics. Its application focuses on the greater region of Athens, Greece and the interpretation of results reveals its efficiency in capturing spatial trends and revealing future tendencies.
