ABSTRACT

Until the 1930s, the electrophysiology of the nervous system had been studied in the United States for the most part away from the brain, in the spinal cord and autonomic and peripheral nervous systems. That focus was moved forward into the central nervous system by an enterprising graduate student at the University of Chicago working in a laboratory headed by a mature neurophysiologist with a propensity for trying out imaginative ideas. Together they took the axonologists’ stimulation-recording techniques into the brain where the full potential of the methodology’s versatility would be realized and a new world of discovery opened.
