mode of attack on the substrate by this fungus is being studied at the U o f Pisa using transmission electron microscopy. Different micromorphological features have been found, according to the composition and the amount of nutritive supplementation of the culture medium. A correlation between the degree of lignin breakdown and cellulose susceptibility to enzymatic hydrolysis with foreign enzymes has also been shown, as reported elsewhere in this conference. Another type of reactor is also being investigated at the U di Genova where the research deals with the continuous ethanol production from hardwood hem icellulose hydrolysate using a fixed-bed column using different microbial strains, whilst at IST, Portugal, the fermentation of artichoke is under investigation. This work began with a comparison of the yield of tubers per plant of several clones (including Braganca and Malveira) and is continuing with studies of batch fermentation by Kluyveromyces marxianus IGC2671 of juices prepared from fresh tubers harvested during last December. Five clones (Braganca, M alveira, Karkowski, Blanco and Medius) have been selected for further study.
