ABSTRACT

Hydrocarbons based on petrochemicals are widely used in packaging. In fact these poly meric materials are substantially non-degradable. In Germany the relative weight portion of plastic packages in domestic disposals is about 8%. But the volume portion is higher than the weight relation. Therefore a partial substitution by degradable substances, i.e. biological materials, could reduce the growing disposal problem. This contribution presents results of our experimental work in producing and characteri zing films based on starch. A comparison with some plastic films pointed out that the starch films had properties similar to plastic films.
